“We don’t have candidates for our management assistant role” and “Young graduates avoid management assistant positions”.
Concerns I often hear and for which companies ask advice.
The issue isn’t the candidates but the outdated job descriptions and job content:
- Avoid the old-school management assistant approach: avoid the ivory tower and solo office, but affirm teamwork and close connection with colleagues.
- Adapt job content incorporating more digital expertise, automation, project management, and certainly for executive assistant roles: strategic thinking.
- The job is not only about execution but also about coordination and delegation. Highlight the importance of ownership and social interaction.
- Management assistants love taking the initiative: ensure freedom in their work organization.
- Management assistants love the variation in what they do: give them the same variation in their benefit package.
- Guarantee growth opportunities, development and training in their areas of expertise.
- Offer flexible and remote work options that fit the assistant’s hectic and flexible work agenda.
- Be transparent: management assistants need a deep understanding of the company’s business, culture, and management team structure before deciding if a job could be a GO.
